What is sustainable fashion?

Fashion is a complex phenomenon to be explained in words. It’s an art which requires a different psychological, cultural, sociological, and ecological point of views. Fashion is a movement. It never stops. Sustainability on the other hand refers to things or methods being environmentally and socially friendly. Waste management is the main aim of sustainability.

Sustainable fashion together is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. But despite the growing interest in sustainability issues within the fashion industry, currently, there is no common definition of what sustainable fashion means.

Sustainable fashion is partly about producing clothes, shoes, and accessories in environmentally and socio-economically sustainable manners, but also about more sustainable patterns of consumption and use, which necessitate shifts in individual attitudes and behavior.

How does Industry work today?

The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of all water pollution worldwide. Microplastic pollution accounts for nearly a third of all ocean plastics. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of humanity's carbon emissions i.e. 1/10 of entire carbon emissions. That's more emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Second, to oil, the clothing and textile industry is the largest polluter in the world.

In the last 2 decades, clothing production has augmented yet each clothing item is kept half as long. Cotton farming is responsible for 24% of insecticides and 11% of pesticides, despite using only 3% of the world’s arable land.

20,000 liters is the amount of water needed to produce one kilogram of cotton; equivalent to what is required to manufacture a single t-shirt and pair of jeans.

Not just the elements of the earth like air and soil, but more than 50 million animals are violently killed for use in fashion every year to fulfill the wants of mankind. These numbers if they’re scaring you, then you are already on the journey to becoming a more sustainable fashion consumer.

What can be done for a better future?

There is enough for the needs, but not the wants of the human race.

And if not controlled, these wants can be the end of the fun behind fashion. Fashion Industry, however, has recently realized the consequences of their actions and is moving towards more sustainable methods of production.

Even without good data, brands and countries are attempting to lessen the fashion industry’s impact. Last year, 150 companies joined a pact where they agreed to “science-based” targets around emissions, biodiversity, and single-use plastics by 2050. Sustainability has become the new trend where every brand is owning up to take their share of the load.

They are creating it in a way that is most considerate of humanity and the environment. Sustainability has become the new style. The goal is to have a system that works without leaving a negative footprint. As consumers, we should think about what we buy, know which philosophies we are supporting through your purchases, and also by reusing and recycling our clothing wear.

Slow fashion is another solution to the problems as it is environmentally friendly by producing fewer new items. This means sticking with what you have for a long time. Quality is key here. Some brands have efficiently switched to vegan fashion that is animal friendly. Vegan fashion is environmentally friendly because it reduces the negative environmental impact caused by animals and stops their suffering.

In the end, there is always a better way if we want to look for it.
